Atalanta vs Cagliari
2018/19 Italian Serie A.
Date: Sunday 2 September 2018
Kick-Off: 19:30 UK,
Venue: Stadio Atleti Azzurri d’Italia (Bergamo).
After their Europa League disappointment, Atalanta turn their attention back to domestic affairs as they welcome Cagliari to the Stadio Atleti Azzurri d’Italia on Sunday evening.
Atalanta were unable to find a way past Scandinavian outfit Copenhagen midweek as they were unable to beat them on penalties, and thus their Europa League adventure ended abruptly. It was a bitter end for Gian Piero Gasperini’s side, who were desperate to have another go in the competition after enjoying their time there last season and had made it clear that was going to be their big focus this time around.
They’ll hope to rebound and make a push for the top six while focusing on doing well in the Coppa Italia as well. Having already crushed Frosinone 4-0 to start the Serie A campaign off well, they take on a Cagliari side who threw away a great chance to pick up a win.
The Rossoblu ended up conceding a late penalty to Sassuolo and thus had to settle for a point. Cagliari, meanwhile lost to Empoli and now are seeking their first win of the season, but it won’t be easy as they have always struggled on the road.
Atalanta were quite impressive against Roma initially, racing to a 3-1 lead but threw that away as they crumbled to settle for a 3-3 draw.
That being said, they have shown they are a solid side going forward and they should have no problems rebounding from their Europa League disappointment to pick up a vital win against a Cagliari side who tend to flounder in their travels.
Atalanta vs Cagliari: Head-to-head statistics
- Cagliari won their last game away to Atalanta, which ended a run of 14 straight top-flight away games against them without a win
- Cagliari have lost five of their last six away games in Serie A
- Overall, Atalanta have won 15, drawn five and lost four of their last 24 Serie A meetings at home against Cagliari
Atalanta vs Cagliari: Prediction
Atalanta have scored seven goals from their first two goals so should have no problems scoring against Cagliari’s dodgy defense.
The Rossoblu lost over half of their away trips last season and pretty much against all of the teams in the top half of the table so they’ll be expected to struggle here.
Although Cagliari did manage to stun Atalanta last time at this ground, it’s not likely they can repeat the same result.
