What is an Asian Handicap tip?

The Handicap, or particularly the Asian Handicap is one of the most misunderstood betting markets punters have had to deal with. And at the same time, if clearly understood, it is one of the most useful as well.

One of the main issues that bettors face is the sheer number of games where one team is a huge favorite. Or let’s put it another way – we all have teams that we follow with heart, and more often than not these are the cream of the crop.

These are the teams that we have the most insights about – and logic dictates that we should place bets on these games. But here arises a problem. Whenever a dominant squad plays against an underdog, the odds would be too low – that placing a bet would not be just worth it.

For example – imagine Manchester City are playing against Bournemouth. It goes without saying that the Citizens are expected to deliver a stylish win. However, the odds for a City win would be along the likes of 1.20.

Why risk money for such meagre returns?

The Role of an Asian Handicap bet, and what solution does it offer?

The Asian Handicap allows us to have a go at our favorite teams. From the earlier example, imagine our inference is that Pep Guardiola’s men will win by a margin of at least two goals. How can we make money out of this insight?

City to Win at on odd of 1.20 is out of the equation. And this is where the Asian Handicap comes.

Let’s take the example of a -1.5 Asian Handicap on Manchester City. As the name suggests, we are placing a handicap on Pep’s men. They are starting the game trailing by 1.5 goals. And for the bet to be successful, City will have to win the game by a margin of at least 2 goals.

Example – we place $10 on a -1.5 Asian Handicap Manchester City, against Bournemouth, at an odd of 2.00.

  • Case A – Manchester City 2 – Bournemouth 0 – Bet is successful, and we get $20 back.
  • Case B – Manchester City 2 – Bournemouth 1 – Bet is a failure, and we lose money.
  • Case C – Manchester City 1 – Bournemouth 1 – Bet is a failure, and we lose money.
  • Case D – Manchester City 0 – Bournemouth 1 – Bet is a failure, and we lose money.

As per Case A, Pep and his boys will have to win the game by a minimum of two-goal margin for us to land the bet.

Different Variations of the Asian Handicap

The example of the -1.5 Asian Handicap was used as it is the most used type of AH. But certainly there are different types of the bet. Let’s look at these variations along with examples.

-0.5 Asian Handicap on City – Here, Pep’s men are starting the game trailing by a half-goal. They are trailing by 0.5 goals even before the starting whistle. And in order for us to win the bet, the Citizens will have to win the fixture by any margin. A draw however will see us losing money.

-1.5 Asian Handicap on City – As explained before, the Citizens are starting the game trailing by 1.5 goals, and will have to win by a margin of at two goals to land the bet. 1-0, 2-1, 3-2 wins etc by City will see us lose money.

-2.5 Asian Handicap on City – The English champions start the match trailing by 2.5 goals, and will have to win the fixture by a margin of at least three goals. Which means – 3-0, 4-1, 5-2 wins etc by Manchester City will see us gain money. Whereas a 3-1 Manchester win see us lose our dollar.

Asian Handicap offers bigger odds

As seen in the example, the AH offers bigger odds. Whereas a normal City win had an odd of 1.20, the Handicap raised the odd to 2.00 – thus making our efforts worthwhile.

And bigger the handicap, bigger the odds.

Examples-

  • -0.5 Asian Handicap on Manchester City could offer an odd of 1.20 (rough estimation).
  • -1.5 AH on Man City could offer an odd of 2.00.
  • -2.5 AH on Man City could offer an odd of 2.75 and so on.

+ Asian Handicaps

If you understood how the -Asian Handicaps work, this is going to be a cakewalk. The + handicaps are placed on the underdogs, where they begin the game with an advantage.

For example, a +1.5 Asian Handicap on Bournemouth means, they start the fixture with 1.5 goals already to their name. And this means, any result other than a City win by two or more goals, will see us win money.

Example – we have placed $100 on a +1.5 Asian Handicap on Bournemouth at an odd of 2.00

  • Case A – Manchester City 2 – Bournemouth 0 – Loses money
  • Case B – Manchester City 2 – Bournemouth 1 – Wins $200
  • Case C – Manchester City 1 – Bournemouth 1 – Wins $200
  • Case D – Manchester City 1 – Bournemouth 2 – Wins $200
Conclusion

In short, the Asian Handicap allows us to bet on our favorite teams, even if they are taking on underdogs. It eliminates the issue of better teams always having lower odds. It makes the game much more interesting, and provides a much-needed variety to betting markets.
