Arsenal are keen to end their three match win-less run in English Premier League when they host Southampton at Emirates stadium on Tuesday’s night.
The match is for higher significance for the Gunner as they are desperate for a win to keep the pressure on Leicester and Manchester City in the title race.
Arsenal vs Southampton: Team Form Guide
The 1-0 loss against Chelsea last week is one their second defeat in the league since the 0-2 defeat against West Ham in the opening day. Their last defeat in the league also came against Southampton on the Boxing Day. But just 2 points from last three matches is a bitter blow to their title chances this season.
Southampton on the other hand, grabbed an excellent 1-0 win over Van Gaal’s Manchester United away from home in their last outing. And the positive result at Old Trafford is their first win in five away matches and Southampton is one of the team with a terrible away record this season.
Arsenal vs Southampton: Head-to-Head Stats
The teams met in their reverse fixture on the Boxing Day and Arsenal suffered a humiliating 4-0 loss at St.Mary’s stadium. This made it two consecutive wins for Southampton at home, but when they play Arsenal at Emirates Stadium, they are hardly a threat.
Arsenal are unbeaten at home in 9 Premier League matches against Southampton, which reads 7 wins and 2 draws since 1999-2000 season.
Southampton have beaten Arsenal at home only once in that time and that came in an FA cup match played on 24 September 2014.
Arsenal: Team News
The big boost for Arsenal is the return of Alexis Sanchez and Francis Coquelin from their respective injuries. The duo is expected to start this match replacing Joel Campbell and Flamini.
Per Mertersacker is suspended for this match after picking up a red card in their 0-1 loss to Chelsea last week and Brazilian defender Gabriel will take his place in the starting lineup.
Arsenal: Predicted Line-up (4-2-3-1)
Cech – Monreal, Koscielny, Gabriel, Bellerin – Coquelin, Ramsey – Sanchez, Ozil, Walcott – Giroud
Southampton: Team News
Graziano Pelle and Gardos are causalities for Ronald Koeman. The Dutch boss is expected to field the same side he used against Manchester United last weekend. The new signing Charlie Austin will once again start of from the bench.
Southampton: Predicted Line-up (4-2-3-1)
Forster – Bertrand, Fonte, van Dijk, Soares – Waynama, Clasie – Targett, Mane, Tadic – Long
Arsenal vs Southampton: Prediction
Arsene Wenger knows well that his team must win this to keep their title hopes alive and will be hoping that his key players live up to the occasion. The return of Alexis Sanchez together with the brilliant form of Mesut Ozil and Aron Ramsey will be an added advantage.
Southampton have admirably well against Manchester United and the big plus is the debut goal of new signing Charlie Austin. But the team is pretty poor on away matches over the last two seasons.
This match could end up in a very comfortable win for the Gunners and expect them to keep a clean sheet. My prediction for this match is Arsenal to win by 2 goals to nil.
