Antwerp vs Waasland-Beveren
Belgium First Division A
Date: Friday, 29 January 2021
Kick-Off at 19.45 UK
Venue: Bosuilstadion, Deurne.
Antwerp’s ambitions of clinching the top-four finish at the end of the regular part of the First Division A campaign have suffered a big blow last weekend when the Great Old fell 1-2 at home to Oostende. They are still holding the third position but are now lock on points with Standard Liege and just one above Anderlecht.
The team led by Francky Vercauteren will thus be highly motivated to prevent another upset on Friday evening when they play host to the rock-bottomed Waasland-Beveren in the first game of the Matchday.
The gulf in quality should be expressed in the favour of the hosts, but they will still have to be at 100% of their possibilities here. As bad as Waasland-Beveren looked so far in the season, they managed to avoid defeats in back-to-back league outings against Mouscron and Anderlecht.
The last weekend’s goalless draw away at Anderlecht was a particularly surprising result and a massive confidence-booster for Nicky Hayen and his troops.
Antwerp vs Waasland-Beveren Head-to-head
- Although they lead the head to head tie by a single win, Antwerp have completely dominated this match-up in the last couple of years.
- The Great Old won three on the bounce against Waasland-Beveren, each time by at least three goals difference.
- Antwerp claimed a demolishing 0-3 victory when the two sides last met each other in late-December last year.
Antwerp vs Waasland-Beveren Prediction
The hosts are massive favourites by the look at the standings and the recent head to head record. Nevertheless, they seem to have struggled for goals lately, especially in the home fixtures. Vercauteren’s men lost two of the last four home matches in the league. It is a poor run if we know the defeats came against the likes of Zulte-Waregem and Oostende.
On the other side, the visitors will enter the game massively encouraged after holding heavyweights Anderlecht to a goalless draw last weekend. We believe they can take advantage of momentum and keep this at least a low-scoring contest. The Under 2.5 goals FT is priced up at the sky-high 2.75 odds. Braver punters can try with the visitors not to lose at the odds of 3.00.
