AZ Alkmaar vs Willem II: Prediction
Alkmaar’s excellent run of form and seven-game winning streak came to an end on December 21st with Marco Bizot’s early red card leading to a crushing 3-0 defeat to struggling Sparta Rotterdam.
One mistake has undone months and months of hard work, as Ajax took back the throne of Dutch football, with AZ slipping to 2nd, now three points behind their great rival in two-horse race, one they’ve beaten not long ago.
But the Cheeseheads will be raring to go, to get back on the winning track and enter New Year with a win in front of their own fans where they’ve been so far almost impeccable; seven wins in nine games, a draw and a loss (with just five goals conceded) far back in October in a weird game v Heerenveen.
Willem II have been a revelation in the first half of the season and they were keen to head into the winter break on the back of another victory but Fortuna had to rain on their parade and hold them off in 0-0 draw.
PSV benefited the most from that, moving past Tricolores to win back third spot on Eredivisie table, with Tilburg-based side slipping down to 4th.
Since November 3rd and unlucky loss v pesky Groningen, Willem II is unbeaten away from home, managing to catch the mighty Ajax on the wrong foot, shocking everyone with a comfortable win in Amsterdam, proving once more why they’re deemed third best team of the Netherlands on the road this season.
Arne Slot will be without services of two players for this derby, injured defender Pantelis Hatzidiakos and suspended #1 Marco Bizot while Fernando Lewis is only (long term) absentee for Tricolores.
Going by their h2h history, looking at their past few duels and considering Willem II’s proficiency on travels (they haven’t scored in just two out of nine travels), I’m willing to back both of these fine sides to put it past one another.
I’d also love to try Asian Handicap +1.5 on Willem II. While I’m of opinion that AZ is winning this, can’t see them winning by two or more. Their recent games were really close affairs, with AZ going over this limit only once, back in January 2018.
