Algeria vs Nigeria
Africa Cup of Nations
Date: Sunday, 14 July 2019
Kick off at 20:00 UK / 21:00 CET
Venue: Cairo International Stadium.
Algeria failed to keep a clean sheet for the first time in their campaign and narrowly made it through to the semi-finals on penalties after the scores were tied at 1-1 following extra time in their quarterfinal clash with Ivory Coast.
Despite making far more attempts at goals than their counterparts, the squad found the back of the net not more than once with Feghouli in the opening half. It was the Elephants who began the latter forty-five minutes on a positive note and finally got a goal of their own through Jonathan Kodjia in the 62nd minute.
Djamel Belmadi’s men did see six of their eighteen shots find the target, but it was not enough to hand them the game at the end of the regulation time. The squad will certainly have to be a lot more accurate and lethal in their attacks if they are to book their berth in the finals.
The Nigerians bagged the win by a 2-1 scoreline, at the end of the ninety minutes, in their quarterfinal tie with South Africa. The team enjoyed very little time on the ball though but were able to make eleven attempts at goal nevertheless.
Chukwueze broke the deadlock close to the hour mark but the deficit was cut short by Zungu after the restart. Troost-Ekong saved his team’s blushes by slotting the winning goal, with just one minute left of regulation time.
The semi-final clash between the two sides is unlikely to be a high scoring one, and you can certainly count on both the sides to be on their defensive best.
