Alexander Zverev vs James Duckworth
Wimbledon, 1st round
Date: Tuesday, 3rd July 2018
Expected Start at 11:30 UK / 12:30 CET
Alexander Zverev will push hard to try and finally justify the tag of a fourth-seeded player as he is yet to produce at a grand slam in spite of winning Masters Events on multiple occasions.
The German NextGen has never gone beyond the last 16 round at a major tournament (all up until this season’s Roland Garros) and that’s exactly where his Wimbledon journey came to an end last year when he fell short to Canadian bomber Milos Raonic falling 6-1 in the deciding fifth set.
It was the German’s best showing at Wimbledon. Can he go at least one step further this time around?
The first hurdle comes in the like of James Duckworth who has mainly failed to progress from the opening round in his history at the unofficial Championship of the world.
Duckworth had only reached the second round once, three years ago, going past Malek Jaziri of Tunisia in five narrow sets.
The 26-year-old Australian was stopped in the first qualifying round in the following attempt, while he did not feature the tournament at all in 2017.
Alexander Zverev vs James Duckworth: Head-to-head
Zverev and Duckworth locked horns just once in the past.
The clash took place four years ago at Heilbronn 2 Challenger (clay) and it saw Zverev’s straight sets win (6-3 6-4).
Alexander Zverev vs James Duckworth: Prediction
Zverev won’t enter the tournament in the best of moods following his sloppy displays at Roland Garros and Halle.
The German star did go beyond the R16 for the first time ever at a major in Paris, but his displays were anything but promising there as Sascha was forced into five sets against Lajovic, Dzumhur and Khachanov all before falling 3-0 to Dominic Thiem in the last eight.
He surprisingly could not take more than five games in the Halle opener against the latter champions Borna Coric as we have to question his fitness ahead of the Wimbledon start.
Duckworth had a number of injuries this season as he has skipped the entire campaign ever since losing in the second round of Australian Open qualifications.
Nevertheless, he showed a performance in three narrow sets against Marin Cilic in the opening round of Roland Garros a month ago.
Zverev is a heavy favourite here and his victory should not come in doubts, but we would not be shocked to see the German struggling at the start of the match.
We’ll be brave enough and go with Sascha dropping a set and winning 3-1 here at the sky-high 4.00 odds.
You can also try with the Over 29.5 games in the match at the 1.80 odds.
