2016/ 17 Champions League Play-Off,
Date: Tuesday, 16 August, 2016.
Kick-Off: 19:45 UK,
Venue: Amsterdam ArenA (Amsterdam).

It is a mission impossible for the d├ębutantes FC Rostov when they face Ajax Amsterdam for a place in the group stages of 2016/17 UEFA Champions League group stages.

Ajax started their journey for a Champions league group stage place from the third round of qualifiers after finishing second in last season’s Eredivisie. The Dutch were made to work hard by the Greek opposition PAOK Thessaloniki. Ajax were held to a 1-1 draw in the first leg at home. The Greeks then took an early lead in the return leg. Davy Klaassen led the comeback and his two goals on either halves, the second in the 87th minute send Ajax into the play-offs.

FC Rostov are in their first ever UEFA Champions League qualification campaign. They surpassed a strong Anderlecht in the third qualification round. The fist leg at Rostov-on-Don was eventful and the Russians went down twice, but eventually earned a 2-2 draw setting the second leg in Belgium wide open. But they hardly gave their opponents a sniff in the away leg and wrapped up the fixture 2-0 and the tie 4-2 on aggregate.

Ajax vs Rostov: Head-to-Head Stats

Ajax and Rostov are meeting for the first time in a UEFA competition.

Ajax have previously met a Russian opposition in Spartak Moscow on two separate fixtures. The latest of which was for the round of 16 of the 2010/11 Europa League in where Ajax lost in both legs, 1-0 away and 3-0 at home. Their previous meeting was in the 1998 edition of UEFA cup, which also resulted in two defeats.

Ajax vs Rostov: Prediction

Ajax have started the season in an unconvincing style. They have drawn in each of the two competitive matches at home, while won in both of their away games. They have scored 8 goals, but also conceded 5, keeping a clean sheet in none.

While Rostov will be high on confidence after defeating a bigger side like Anderlecht in the previous round. But they managed two wins from their five competitive matches of this season so far, losing one.

By the look of their team forms, there is a better chance that this games might see both teams scoring at least once. Also with Ajax losing in all of the previous four games against a Russian opposition and Rostov coming high on confidence, the visitors might take something away from this fixture.
