Ajax vs AEK Athens
Champions League
Date: Wednesday, 19 September 2018
Kick-Off at 17:55 UK
Venue: Johan Cruijff Arena (Amsterdam).
AEK Athens have shown off as a very tough side early in 2018/19 campaign and they travel to Amsterdam as they open the competition in Group E on Wednesday evening in the hope they can build on such performances and put on another great challenge.
Enosis have beaten Celtic and Vidi in the Qualifiers and started off their Super League campaign in a similar fashion, bagging nine points in three games – including a great 4-0 home win over Panionios just days ago. Marinos Ouzounidis will want his men to take confidence from it and it’s hard seeing it any other way, which promises an in-form outfit on the day.
Ajax come into the match on the back of a similarly convincing Eredivisie win, where they outclassed Groningen and bagged a 3-0 win at this ground. They’ve based their Champions League Qualifiers success on performances at Johan Cruijff Arena – only beating both Standard Liege and Dynamo Kyiv here with draws on the road along the way – and will want more of the same in the Group Stage.
We have seen AEK regularly netting goals on the road and we do see them making it happen once again, as we stick our necks out for a Double Chance – Draw or Away win at 3.00 – which does feel like more than just a lively longshot at this point.
However, they could have to outgun the rivals who boast great goalscoring tally at Johan Cruijff Arena to do so! We thus expect a very narrow occasion but with goals, as we also back a YES on Both teams to score at 2.00 – hoping the visitors can show off in the attacking third.
