AEK vs Ajax
UEFA Champions League
Date: Tuesday, 27 November 2018
Kick-Off at 17:55 UK / 18:55 CET
Venue: Olympiako Stadio Spyros Louis (Athens).
AEK will be hoping to snatch their maiden point(s) on Tuesday night when they play host to Dutch runners-up Ajax in the fifth round of the Champions League group phase. The Greek outfit cannot finish in the top two regardless of what happens in following two games, but they will at least try and stay in the contest for the third place.
It is currently four points away for the Marinos Ouzonidis side who need to at least try and make it three to keep chances of overtaking the Eagles in the last Matchday at Estadio da Luz. Given Benfica are to play Bayern Munich away at Allianz Arena, a draw would work well for the hosts who will obviously be much happier with a victory.
AEK vs Ajax: Head-to-head
The two sides met each other in the 1994/95 Champions League round robin phase when Ajax came on top both home and away (2-1 and 2-0).
De Godenzonen picked up a convincing 3-0 victory at Johan Cruijff Arena in the first round of this term’s campaign thanks to second half goals from Nicolas Tagliafico and Donny van der Beek.
AEK vs Ajax: Prediction
The visitors will come into the game in much higher spirits. They can go beyond the group phase for the first time in this decade with a win here. Even if they lose, Bayern’s victory over Benfica in the other game of the group would do for Erik ten Hag’s men who are four points off the Eagles in third ahead of final two fixtures of the campaign.
Furthermore, Ajax did well in recent league ties. They bagged ten goals in back-to-back Eredivisie wins over Excelsior and NAC Breda. They won four and drew one of last nine matches across competitions.
The story is completely opposite with AEK who lost three on the spin across competitions. The latest of failures came on Saturday when they disapprovingly fell 2-1 away at Panaitolikos.
