AC Milan vs Lazio
2017/18 Italian Serie A.
Date: Sunday, 28 January 2018
Kick-Off: 17:00 UK,
Venue: Stadio San Siro (Milan).
Lazio continued their push for a top four spot by crushing Udinese in their make-up game midweek 3-0 at the Stadio Olimpico and now they have a struggling AC Milan in their sights. Simone Inzaghi’s men sit in a very impressive third place heading into this fixture. They’re three points ahead of Inter, who have yet to win a game in 2018 and a comfortable five ahead of cross town rivals Roma.
In fact, Lazio aren’t too far behind league leaders Napoli, either, although the Scudetto isn’t exactly their goal this season. The Aquile are really more focused on finishing inside the top four and securing a Champions League berth, as they’re also in the final 32 of the Europa League. Still, there’s plenty of time remaining between now and May, so challenging for the Scudetto isn’t an entirely unrealistic proposition either. A win against Milan this Sunday will certainly ensure they get even closer towards a top four berth at least.
Milan are also still hoping to secure a top four spot but that’s becoming a pipe dream. After all their big spending, they sit in seventh place, which is disappointing to say the least. They have well over ten points to close down to even get there, but they’re still alive in the Coppa Italia and the Europa League, so they do have other options to get there.
Gennaro Gattuso hasn’t brought the results the club have wanted, especially with some disappointing results against bottom feeder sides like Benevento and Hellas Verona – drawing with Le Streghe and actually losing 3-0 to Hellas Verona in the league. Pressure is growing on the former midfielder to say the least, and Milan notably lost 4-1 to Lazio in the reverse fixture earlier this season. Can they avoid a similar humiliating result in front of their home support this weekend?
AC Milan vs Lazio: Head-to-head statistics
Lazio have lost just one away game in Serie A so far this season (W8 D2).
AC Milan have seen under 2.5 goals in their last 3 home matches against Lazio in all competitions.
Milan are undefeated in 16 of their last 17 home matches against Lazio in all competitions.
AC Milan vs Lazio: Prediction
Lazio have been in amazing form, with 13 goals in their last three games. Three against Udinese, and five against Chievo. Milan’s defense has been in poor shape, despite the addition of Leonardo Bonucci, so they will be at the mercy of Lazio’s attack – even if Ciro Immobile doesn’t make the trip.
Milan have lost all of their games against all of the top sides and are expected to struggle here as all of their points they have picked up have been against bottom sides. Still, they’re playing at home, and this will be the second game for Lazio in a week – could fatigue play a slight factor for the Aquile?
