Arsenal are on the verge of another Champions League round of 16 exit after the home defeat to Barcelona. And their latest home defeat to Swansea is the third consecutive loss in all competitions and Wenger knows that their title challenge is well and truly over.
Arsene Wenger will be still reluctant to take the blame as he believes it is normal for teams to have one or two bad weeks, but this is more than enough to cost you the title. Unlike previous seasons, he didn’t had many injury worries this term, but the lack of squad depth made it look rather worse. His explanation for not finding suitable back-ups was ‘no improvements available for the word class players’ he has at his disposal.
Well, these stats on those world class talents are very disturbing, especially for an Arsenal fan.
Olivier Giroud – No Goals in last 10 games
Giroud has scored 18 goals for Arsenal in all competitions this season. But his recent performances must be under scanner after failing to find the back of net in the last 8 appearances.
The 29-year old Frenchman has now gone on for over 654 minutes without a goal and he last put the ball into the back of the net in the 3-3 draw over Liverpool on 13th January 2015.
Theo Walcott – 1 goal in his last 15 matches
Theo Walcott has signed a new four-year contract worth £140,000 a week at the beginning of this season. This made him one of the club’s top earners alongside the likes of Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil.
The once highly rated teenager has managed just 4 goals from 22 league appearances this season. And his recent form could raise big questions as his only involvement in a goal in the last 15 appearances was the equaliser in the 2-1 win against Leicester City. Don’t bother looking at the assist column too in that period; that is a zeo.
But it will be even more alarming to find that the English international has reached over 10 goals mark in a season only once since making his senior début in the 2006-07 season. That was in the 2012-13 season when he scored 14 goals from 32 matches, rest of the seasons you could find him around the 5 goal mark.
Alexis Sanchez – 11 Premier League Games without a Goal
There is no doubt on the talent possessed by the little Chilean, but already many Arsenal fans have started dubbing him as one season wonder. There has been much talk about how Alexis Sanchez’s return from injury could play a vital role in helping Arsenal win the title this season.
Chamberlain – Finish at 2 Goals per Season
The 22-year old is in his fifth season with the Gunners and has already made over 100 league appearances. His goal tally is a bit of worry and have so far not crossed over 2 goals in an entire season after making around 20 appearances every season. If the information from London is to be believed a contract renewal is due here.
Aaron Ramsey – 4 goals and 3 Assists in 24 Appearances
And Aaron Ramsey, who was expected to play an influential role in the midfield as much as the German hasn’t rose to the occasion yet. A tally of 4 goals and 2 assists from 24 league appearances says it all.
These are all stats of players whom Wenger described as pretty irreplaceable when quizzed about reluctance to go into the transfer market for reinforcements. We believe owners will be happy seeing a nice balance sheet at the end of the season, but fans want trophies.
Where would be Arsenal without Mesut Ozil?
It is a plain truth that Arsenal would have been in the bottom half of the table without Ozil. He assisted in 18 of the 44 Premier League goals and scored 5 by himself. And that’s playing part in 23 Arsenal goals, which is a 52.27% contribution. Without him this team would have been a disaster. Isn’t there a reason for why he is not signing a new contract?
At the start of every season, Arsenal promise much to the fans and in the end, it is like watching the remake of the same movie over and over again, we all know how it starts and how it ends. To be precise, get knocked out in the round of 16 of the Champions League and finish fourth in the English Premier League.
